We congratulate Zhiyuan (Keny) Ge on completion of his PhD-Dissertation at the University of Bergen. 

His work has been concentrated to numerical modeling/simulation work of turbidity currents interacting with fault-controlled field-scale topography. He has utilized the process-based modeling software MassFLOW-3DTM to investigate a turbidity current flowing across a single normal fault segment, and also studied the impact of relay ramp geometry. The thesis is divided into three papers, and two of the papers are numerical modeling and simulation works. He has been working together with the supervisors: Professor Wojciech Nemec, Professor Rob L. Gawthorpe, Professor Atle Rotevatn, and Complex Flow Design has been supporting his numerical work. 


 A conclusion of his work is: "The integration of structural and turbidity current modelling with numerical methods opens a range of possibilities to investigate natural-scale turbidity current behaviour in tectonic-controlled settings such as rifts, thrust fold belts as well as salt basins in passive margins. Particularly, the application of computational fluid dynamics modelling proves to be an affordable method to explore the hydraulic responses of density currents interacting with different topographies.

MassFLOW-3D™ has successfully been tested to export 3D data into Petrel,

to build a variety of maps and cross sections for a better post processing

interpretation and analysis of the model and simulated sediment gravity

flow depositions and turbidites.

Easy data transfer and clear visualization of results like individual and/or

cumulative thickness maps, stratigraphic maps, Net-to-gross maps, flow

barriers maps, lateral extension of the deposits, etc...
